What to look for

Expository preaching makes the main point of a Bible passage the main point of the sermon, then applies it to the life of the congregation. It places God's Word, not the preacher's agenda, at the center of church life.

This matters because God's Word convicts sin, gives life, builds up believers, and sanctifies the church. A church where the Bible shapes every sermon is a church where God is truly speaking.

Isaiah 55:10-11; 2 Tim 4:2

A healthy church is clear on who God is, who we are as sinners, and what God has done through Christ to save those who repent and believe. It addresses God's holiness, humanity's sinful condition, and the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross.

The Gospel is proclaimed, not assumed. There is no other path to forgiveness and eternal life.

Church membership is a commitment every Christian should make to attend, love, serve, and submit to a local church. It is a covenant relationship, where members take responsibility for one another's spiritual growth.

The church testifies to God's power to transform people, displaying the Gospel to the world through its life together.

Acts 2:41; 1 Cor 10:17

Christ gave two ordinances to his church: baptism as the mark of entry into the covenant community, and the Lord's Supper as the ongoing meal of remembrance and proclamation.

Baptism is a public declaration of faith and union with Christ in his death and resurrection. The Lord's Supper proclaims his death until he comes, calling the church to examine itself and renew its trust in the Gospel.

Prayer is simply talking to God, through praise, confession, requests, and lament. It is fundamental to church life because what God says in his Word demands a response from us.

Discipleship is the intentional process of growing in godliness through instruction and imitation of mature believers. Christians need ongoing help against sin, and healthy churches build in rhythms for that growth.
