John Newton (1725-1807)
A collection of pastoral letters written by the former slave-trader turned Anglican rector, organized by correspondent and covering the full range of Christian experience: prayer, affliction, assurance, growth in grace, and the marks of genuine faith. Newton circulated these letters privately over many years before publishing them in 1781, and William Cowper called the book an English classic of rare excellence. It became one of the most widely read works of evangelical pastoral theology in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
