Letters of Samuel Rutherford

Samuel Rutherford (c. 1600-1661)

Written chiefly during his banishment to Aberdeen from 1636 to 1638, these letters show Rutherford at the height of his powers: a pastor under sentence, denied his pulpit, writing with urgent tenderness to nobles, ministers, and common parishioners alike. Each letter is dense with Christ, pressing the love of the Saviour on every correspondent as the one sufficient answer to trial, grief, temptation, and death. Andrew Bonar, who edited the standard edition, called them the nearest earthly resemblance to heavenly correspondence he had ever read.
