The Expulsive Power of a New Affection
Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847)
Preached during Thomas Chalmers' Glasgow ministry, this sermon argues that the human heart cannot abandon its love of the world by sheer resolve, nor by being told the world is worthless, because the heart will not endure a vacuum. Chalmers contends that an old affection is driven out only when a stronger one takes its place, and that the love of God revealed in Christ is the single affection powerful enough to dispossess the love of the world. It became the most celebrated thing Chalmers ever wrote, and its central insight has shaped Reformed and evangelical teaching on sanctification ever since.
