A Divine and Supernatural Light

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)

Edwards draws a sharp line between natural knowledge about God and the saving knowledge given by the Spirit: the first can be achieved by study and reason, the second only by divine illumination acting directly on the soul. Preached in Northampton in 1733, the sermon is one of Edwards' most precise theological statements and the doctrinal foundation beneath his Great Awakening preaching. It remains the clearest Reformed account of how regeneration transforms the quality, not merely the quantity, of what a person knows about God.
