Charity and Its Fruits
Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)
Edwards preached this series of sixteen sermons to his Northampton congregation in 1738, working through every verse of 1 Corinthians 13 to argue that Christian love is not one virtue among many but the very sum and soul of all saving grace. The series came at the height of the First Great Awakening, when Edwards urgently needed to distinguish true religious affection from its counterfeits: love, he argues, is the one infallible mark. The final sermon describes heaven as a world of love, and is among the most beautiful passages Edwards ever wrote.
